Character and Personality Claire Setton

10 Apr

In Horatio Algers novel, Ragged Dick, Dick is a homeless boy that later becomes a wealthy man. This rag to riches story is the epitome of the American Dream. There is a very big difference between personality and character. Character is something that is inherently inside someone, is who you are. Your personality is something that you get as you go through life and go through certain experiences.

Dicks character is an honest and charasmatic. through his life on the streets he becomes a spendthrift boy, and knows how to manipulate people. He utilizes his charming good looks to get things out of people and to his own benefit. This is how he succeed in the rest of his life. Although Dick has a few ” rough edges” he is still has a kind character. This can be seen when Dick sees his own good qualities in Henry, and with “a certain chivalrous feeling” (154) lets Henry stay in his room that night. Dicks inherent character, and the personality he got from his surroundings made him who he was, and an extremely complex character.

Dick’s roughness is a product of his circumstances but he has a heart of gold. I agree with your description of his kindness, character and personality.
