Soldiers Without Swords – Donghyuk Chang

Although it can’t be denied that the black newspaper had took a part in rallying African-Americans from early 1920s to mid 1960s, I believe there’re a downside of the black press, too.

During “The Great Migration”, newspapers in north led southern African-Americans to the north where was mostly industrialized. The northern industries needed skilled labors, but they didn’t want to pay their own money to do. In the consequence, although the new migrants tasted the ‘free’ air in the north, the newcomers become the bottom of industrial pyramid. Still the newspaper educated them how to behave among the settlers. Farmers transformed to industrial workers, and they had to start from the lowest level of the new society again.
