Harlem Shake

24 Feb

In the past few months, an internet meme (a concept spread throughout the Internet from person to person) known as the Harlem Shake has taken over Youtube and the Internet. The Harlem Shake is a short video in which someone dances to the music of the song “Harlem Shake” by Baauer. The dancer begins dancing alone and masked in a public place, and then the rest of the crowd joins in. The first Harlem Shake video was uploaded to Youtube on February 2, 2013 by five teenagers in Australia. Since then, over 40,000 Harlem Shake videos have been uploaded by all types of groups.

I think that the Harlem Shake explosion is a great example of how fast paced the media is today. The idea that such a short insignificant video can spread and become a worldwide phenomenon in a matter of days is mind blowing. The media has the power to carry all kinds of ideas, both good, bad and neutral to anyone with access to the Internet. I think that it has brought the world together in a way. The modern media has made our world much smaller because everyone on every continent can stay connected by simple videos such as the Harlem Shake.

Here is the link to just one of many Harlem Shake videos posted on Youtube:
